Opened by Murray Hill Police Sergeant Abe “Sarge” Katz in 1964, this perennially popular 24-hour deli has been satiating customers for decades. The menu includes over-stuffed corned beef sandwiches, giant flame-broiled burgers, homemade matzo ball soup, and mouth-watering cheese blintzes.

Sink your teeth into Sarge’s warm and juicy pastrami sandwich and you’ll probably agree with Sarge’s ardent fans that this is one of the best Jewish delis in New York. The secret? Sarge’s cures its own meats with special spice rubs, using recipes handed down over three generations. Sarge’s cheesecake is made the old-fashioned way; with a crunchy graham cracker crust, vanilla flavor, and with creamy texture—it’s impossible to resist. Usually good. This time you guys delivered 90 minutes after I placed an order. I think the disappointment is bigger because the expectations are higher. Work on it please.

Love Sarge's! Wish they didn't take so long... + deli sandwiches + chicken soup (especially when feeling blue) + snacks - potato pancakes (my grandmother is unbeatable. these are OK)

I order from here because its a 24 hour place. Wouldn't recommend the hot chocolate. Food is ok.

A new find for me, and a keeper! I highly recommend to anyone who likes a deli or par with Carnegie to give these folks a try. Everything was thoughtfully included, Mustard, Mayo, Pickles, Russian Dressing, and they use their own uniformed delivery people who actually seem to care! Bravo!

Very rude service. I had to call 2 hours after I placed the order, I spoke to a rude employee who told me my food had been delivered to my "doorman", I was working at a hospital with security officers and no doorman. No food arrived, no phone call from a delivery person, and the employee at Sarge's told me to take it up with Seamless if I want a refund.

First-rate corned beef and pastrami. This is a real find. The real thing at a place not as storied as Carnegie, Katz's and 2nd Avenue, but every bit their equal. Delivery times can be a little long depending how far you are from the restaurant.

I order food almost daily as I am not a big cook. When I say, this is the worst food delivery I have ever had, I mean it. I threw away the entire order! potato knish tatsed cold and was freezing cold in the middle.... The French onion soup tatsted like onions in hot water. The broth was actually close to clear in color... I am so unhappy I just wasted $15. This place should be ashamed they would such horrible food. I literally am ordering from some where else right now because I threw the entire order in the garbage.

Sarges, oh sarges how I love you and your carrot cake. Their sandwich selection is not competition for carnegie, but the potato pancakes & carrot cake are A+. I once ordered carrot cake 10 times in one day from there..it was the best and worst day of my life

Would give zero stars if I could. Delivery took over 2 hours! Food was cold and gross. Sour cream was liquid like milk. Restaurant was rude and did not care to do anything about the issue. Seamless had to give me a refund.

I ordered a coffee, a slice of pie and an eclair. Two hours and 4 bizarre phone calls later (all made by me -- no followup or help from them whatsoever), nothing had arrived. So I guess I can't really rate the food, but if they take your money and never deliver, I figure it can't get much worse.

Delivery was fast considering we are on the Upper West Side. The Roast Beef was great and it is quite a substantial sandwich. The coleslaw was not good; runny and virtually no taste.

Ahhh, Sarge's. It's a love-hate relationship with you. I've tried to tell myself not to order you when I stumble home drunk but I always find myself opening my browser and clicking to you. You never fail to deliver at any hour and the food is always great. All the sandwiches are awesome...the pastrami is ridiculously good. I have an unhealthy love for buffalo chicken wings and have probably ordered it over 10x. For some reason, they make it better then most places I've had them in NYC (as good as Wogie's which some consider one of the best). I got the whole chicken soup once when I was sick and it was really really good. It's really a whole chicken cooked with carrots, celery, noodles and a giant matzo ball. Only lacks a star because my friends ordered once from my buffalo wing reco and got food poisoning. You win some, you lose some.

We ordered food and the delivery said it would take 50-65 minutes. At 85 minutes we called to see where the order was and a lady apologized and said it was on the way. At 105 minutes we called just as the food was delivered to complain to get a refund because we had to wait an excessive amount of time for our food. The manager spoke to me and refused to give a refund, repeatedly saying that a refund was up to them to decide and not for us to decide. I rate this a one star because there food is okay but the rude and poor customer service gives them a one. They lost a customer. The manager did not once apologize and was completely rude.

The food probably would have been okay. However, since it took them THREE HOURS to deliver it, it was lukewarm, soggy, and congealed by the time it arrived. Not worth it.

Pastrami Sandwich was good. But whatever you do, do not order the borscht. Borscht is not supposed to be sweet and is supposed to have substance to it with cabbage and chunks of meat. We ordered both the regular borscht and the cold borscht. The regular was colder than the cold borscht. Really disappointed and slightly insulted that a Russian iconic food is being trampled on by something that looks and tastes like cranberry juice and has a similar consistency. Lay off the sugar.

The food here is incredibly reliable. Despite being a bit pricey for a deli, the sandwiches here are very tasty, yet smaller than those at 2nd Ave Deli. Mozzarella sticks and soups are also quite good, as are the knishes! My only complaint is that delivery takes FOREVER. Standard delivery time is about an hour from when you place the order (but at least they're upfront about it).

i can't believe they delivered a sandwich to financial district. look about an hour which was expected since they are far away. i ordered cornbeef pastrami and it was good. lots of meat. pickle tasted like mcdonalds. after having pastrami from David's brisket house in BedStuy, my pastrami expectations have changed. this place does have good pastrami but it was cut really thin and David's cut's are thicker. tip the guy if you're far away.

Food arrived totally cold. I ordered chicken fingers. They arrived cold and soggy and dripping in honey mustard sauce because the sauce had opened up in the bag. The chicken fingers must have been soaking in them for an hour because when they got here everything was cold, soggy, wet and tasted like nothing but honey mustard. Gross. Will not be ordering again.

A greate Jewish delly with perfectly made Matzoh ball soup and all the combo sandwiches. It could be a little less expensive given the type of food, but the quality is there.

Love a good deli sandwich and Sarge's didn't disappoint. Had eaten there before, but this was the first delivery. Order came relatively quick and everything was warm/fresh. Food portions seemed even larger than I remembered. Will definitely order there again.

Delivery was prompt and the food came hot. The latke was big and impressively crispy considering it was delivered wrapped in foil. Well-seasoned and tasty. Matzoh ball soup was good but be aware that consomme means you're not going to get any veggies in the soup - just broth and matzoh ball.

Sarge's has delicious sandwiches. The hot pastrami with mustard is DELICIOUS. The sandwiches are so big that they could easily feed two hungry people. Or feed one person for several meals. I have only picked up from the restaurant, never had food delivered, so I can't speak to that. But it's definitely worth ordering from here.

sarge's is a dependable neighborhood old world ny deli. my last order i got the chicken consomme with matzoh balls, fried kreplach, kasha varnishkas, and a tongue/pastrami combo on rye. everything was as good as usual except the sandwich. i guess i should've ordered the leaner versions of the pastrami and tongue because although it was tasty, they were a bit fattier than usual. that being said, i would order from sarge's again as i have in the past.

Excellent corned beef sandwiches and the Souper soup is great!
Posted 9 months ago by Matt O.
The sandwiches are quite delicious. The pastrami is really succulent and flavorful though quite fattening. The corned beef is... everything you'd like corned beef to be. Though overpriced, the sandwiches are quite large and extra bread is probably necessary. They come with rather disappointing pickles. The french fries are pretty good too, fat and crinkle cut, they're very satisfying. Delivery time was thankfully less than the estimate and took a reasonable amount of time.

So disappointed with my order and service. Being sick, I ordered 2 QUARTS of "chicken soup" to last the duration of my sickness. The delivery was timely, sure, but when I went to portion out some soup for myself, there was no chicken, vegetables, or noodles. Just broth and matzoh balls. I called the deli, dismayed at having received the wrong delivery, only to be informed that I was mistaken and that the broth and matzoh before me was in fact their version of chicken soup. Where's the chicken? I asked. It's chicken broth. well thanks, sarge, i got that much. Without any sort of apology for the confusion, the offended deli representative told me that this was how they'd been making chicken soup for 50 years and how they would continue to do so. That's fair. Carry on. Just please make a note on your menu that your chicken soup does not actually have any chicken in it. And be nice to your customers.

It took over an hour to get my food, which was cold when it arrived. Sarge's is at 36th and 3rd, but for some reason has chosen to offer deliver to the Upper West Side. Though I appreciate wanting to offer a wide delivery area, many customers will not realize how far their food will have to travel, which will lead to long waiting times and cold food.
Posted 11 months ago by Josh Y.
Think twice about ordering from Sarge's because their delivery will take twice as long as the listing indicates. And when we called to ask about the whereabouts of our order, they were full of excuses. ("Just wait fifteen minutes more...") Sarge's really needs to rethink its delivery zone and estimated delivery time, because it's bordering on fraud. Hopefully, SeamlessWeb will make them change these falsities on their website. Sarge's food is not worth the wait.

I don't live near Sarge's but after finding them on Seamless last year, I ALWAYS order soup and fresh-squeezed orange juice when I have a cold (and I've sent it to friends when they're sick, which is a huge hit). It's not the kind of place that delivers in under 20 mins, but they always make it within 45 and the delivery guys are SO nice. Some of the review mention a lack of chicken pieces in the soup, but for "Jewish Deli" soup in NY, that's actually the norm - some would call it "Chicken Stock" but Sarge's is so full of FLAVOR, its more than just a stock. The Matzoh Brie is also fantastic, the same as my mom would make (scrambled, no onions, etc). Its a generous portion, but somehow I finish it every time.

Sarge's has poor customer service. We ordered food and received a delivery confirmation at 11:23am. At 1:15 our food had still not arrived. When we called to inquire they told us that the food was on the way but would not provide any compensation for our 2 hour wait. I don't recommend ordering from this restaurant.

this place is the best late-night order option in the neighborhood. the stuffing and spinach and that kind of stuff is really good, but i usually just get one of their burgers and french fries which are realllly good. the only problem is that once in a blue moon they'll undercook it, otherwise it's a huge juicy burger not the lame flat kind that many diners around give. same with the fries, when they're smaller pieces and crispy they're awesome as opposed to the rare times that they're chunky and dry.

After 1 hour and 45 minutes (twice as long as quoted), my food is still not here despite multiple calls to the restaurant and multiple assurances it was "on the way." They should get no stars! I ordered on Sunday morning at 830 am. There is no traffic at this time of morning. At an hour and forty minutes I still have not received my food. They supposed left 30 minutes ago. It doesn't take that long to get here. So now I'm going to get cold eggs. When I called they made up some excuse about a freight elevator. But as you can see from others people comments they are consistently late with horrible service. If you expect warm food, or good service don't order from here. Seamless web, you should take them off the service because they don;t deliver what they promise!

The quart of old fashioned chicken soup does not actually contain any chicken. I asked them to include noodles in the chicken soup, and all I received was noodles and broth. Besides that, the food is good but it is very overpriced. I mean who wants to pay $13 for broth and noodles. Where's the chicken?????? Would not order from here again.

I recently ordered "Old Fashioned Chicken Soup" from Sarge's assuming it would be some form of chicken noodle soup. What arrived was a quart of terrible tasting chicken broth with nothing in it. I called to complain about this only to be informed that Sarge's "doesn't put chicken or vegetables in their chicken soup and you are expected to order the noodles separately if you want noodles in your soup." The service was horrible and the food even worse. I would absolutely not recommend this restaurant.

WORST experience ever. They should not offer delivery anywhere above 30th street b/c it takes forever to get the food and then its completely inedible. Doesn't even resemble food. Ridiculous. Worst choice.

Not as Good as Katz's, dry pastrami, machine cut, should melt in mouth but instead fat stuck in teeth.

Took 90 minutes to get here and I got a roast beef sandwich instead of the Turkey I ordered. Very dissapointed

Seamlessweb needs to post the cross streets on this place. I am at 95th, ordered very late night, didn't realize the place was at 33rd STREET! I am already dreading the 2 hour delivery time and I already want to go to bed but don't want to waste money on this order. FML!

Though the food is good, our order took two hours to be delivered. The driver did other deliveries, got lost and had to call us. Honestly, who wants two hour old food?

Probably the worst place to order from on this website. Delivery takes FOREVER. And the description of "Traditional Jewish deli," when they serve bacon cheeseburgers is about as accurate as their food is good.

Very good for brunch. I ordered the eggs benedict with home fries. The home fries were done perfectly, not too burnt, but not too mushy. The muffin was good. I gave it a 10 sec heat up in the microwave and spread some butter on it and it was delicious. I would def order from here again. The reason I gave this restaurant 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because it seems unbelievable to be that delivery takes an hour for poached eggs and a muffin. I know that they advertise the wait time to be 50-65 min but I still think that is unreasonable. Otherwise, good food.

Food was great, however, their delivery is slower than a turtle through peanut butter (almost TWO HOURS). Make sure you order before you get hungry, and it will be perfect!

Unfortunately for Sarge's, great food is not enough (and their food is great!) I order delivery online frequently and I need a delivery restaurant to be *reliable* and at least minimally courteous. This was not the case the other night when their estimated delivery time was 50 to 60 minutes and my actual order took 1 hr 45 minutes. When I called after nearly an hour and a half to ask what was going on the lady sounded confused and didn't seem to know where the guy was. She said he was new. She didn't apologize. When the guy finally got here he didn't apologize either or even address the fact he took nearly two hours to arrive. I asked him if he got lost he said, no, he got stuck in traffic. If it were my business that would have been my cue to say, "I'm sorry it's so late!" Needless to say, the food was cold.

The sandwiches are awesome, especially the turkey which tastes like Thanksgiving leftovers. However, STAY AWAY from the ribs, they are not BBQ and are disgusting! BBQ sauce should not be bright pink

Authentic New York Jewish deli food. I've ordered from them several times and will definitely order again. Great burgers, fries, chicken liver, pastrami, and, of course, pickles.

Food is good but delivery was late - 1-1/2 hrs instead of the promised 30-45 min. Also the two extra pieces of bread I ordered were not included.

I go to Sarge's at least 3 times a week for breakfast and/or lunch and it is simply the best diner/deli in NYC, hands down. The corned beef & tongue sandwich is the best sandwich I've ever had and the corned beef hash & eggs breakfast is just plain awesome.

The site warned delivery would take 65-80 miutes. Even that wasn't enough. It took over an hour and a half for the overpriced food to arrive. When I called to ask where my food was he said they all just went out without even asking my name. That means they gave all the deliverys to one guy who would make several stops at other building before delivering your cold food. These guys just don't care.

I ordered at 11 it came at 1 (estimated time said 20-30 minutes); I had already passed out, but just took the order, which ended up being undercooked, cold, and just not very good. Needless to say, I won't be ordering from here again.

Will not order from here again.
Delivery literally took over 2 hours for a very basic order (omelette + drinks). I called three times, each time I was told the order was already out for delivery. Food arrived totally cold, drinks spilled in the bag, with no apology for the 2 hour wait. It was just ridiculous, will not be ordering from here again.

Better than 2nd Ave deli. The pies & cakes are incredible- our out of town guests always rave about them.

I like the food at Sarge's, though for my last few orders they have exceed the far end of the delivery range by as much as 20-minutes (= a deliver time exceeding an hour) and the food arrives cold. I believe that they wait until they have multiple orders to deliver and then set up some form of queue. I generally don't mind waiting for an order, as long as the food is delivered hot. Cold food and a lengthy delay is what I call a double negative. It is highly unlikely that I will be ordering from Sarge's for delivery again, despite the great corned beef.

Pastrami sandwiches and matzo ball soup are consistently good. Delivery can be slow. Their fries are generally disappointing.

The turkey burger and grilled onions and mushrooms were cooked really well. The mushroom-barley soup was superb as always. The one down note was the onion rings, which were a bit too oily.

got pastrami sandwich (yum) and the knockwurst (pan fried on a hot dog roll). overall pretty good food, but the delivery took an hour and a half.. granted i am 20 blocks away!

I ordered a pizza burger well done from Sarge's @ 12:36 am on 12/22/2009. The burger arrived an hour later and it was rare to medium-rare (completely red and uncooked in the center). When I called them back they didn't even offer to send me another one, I had to ask. And then the manager even called back to tell me that the cook told him that it was well done and that they wouldn't be sending the french fries again, just the hamburger. After another hour, and after me having to call them back again to see what was taking so long, the burger arrived. It was well-done this time, but ice-cold as were ther french fries that preceded it by an hour. How a restaurant like this stays in business is beyond me, but I will never order from them again.

the food came late, it was cold and had very little flavor. I got eggs Benedict - the ham seemed to be of a lower grade, it was tough and as though it had strings through it. the ggs were poached just perfectly, but there was no taste, and the hollandaise sauce was missing. I had to keep adding salt and pepper. I got borscht another day and it came completely cold, which is not the way I have had it served before. the potatoes were also undercooked...

placed an order at 2:04, and it's now 3:38, and they'vej ust now brought all the food. needed to come twice, and the first time, they only brought half the food. had to call to get the rest. also, asked them to please bring utensils, and (we ordered 2 meals), and all they brought was a spoon and napkin

Ordered just the Potato pancakes... they were exactly what i was looking for. They tasted great. Will order again when the craving hits. (Only qualm- delivery guy had no cell phone and needed to rely on a very unhappy security guard to call up to me so I could come down to get my meal).

terrible. omelette had eggshells in it. also, they replaced one of the pastry items i ordered with one of lesser value without calling, etc. to let me know they were out of what i ordered (assuming they didn't just get the order wrong). twice, entire coffee spilled in bag. delivery person and restaurant did not care

While the food is decent, this is the second time in a row that an order from Sarge's (for a single turkey sandwich) has taken more than an hour to arrive. Both times I've called after 45+ minutes and was informed, "Oh, it's leaving right now", only to have to call back and inquire again another 20+ minutes later as to why my turkey on rye had been backburnered. I imagine the team of in-house researchers who study the nuances of the turkey sandwich and recommend experimental approaches for its construction and transportation was otherwise occupied. Completely unacceptable. At the very least the estimated delivery time should be doubled from the 15-30 minutes listed on SW (maybe tripled just to be safe).

I will never order from this place again. The delivery time was well over an hour, when on the description it promised 15-30 minutes. The food was cold when I got it and looked as if the meat was thrown in a plastic tupperware. It was quite disappointing, especially since eating in the restaurant was a great experience.

Terrible service, terrible price!!! For $12.00 plus additional $0.75 for the large roll, I got a Roast Beef Sandwich on the Kaiser roll and two pickles. When I called them and asked where my order with the large roll, I got the answer that it is a large roll, and here is New York. If I don't like, I can find a cheaper price somewhere else!

I've ordered from this place a number of times and have no complaints so far. They delivered on time, within 20-30 mins (of course, I only live a couple of blocks away), and the food has been great. Except fries - they seem to recycle their leftover fries.

Mushroom barley soup was good. Cheese fries were horrendous and should not be made that way! Only reasonably priced with a discount.

Yummy. It may take over an hour to get the delivery in the middle of the night, but the wait is worth it.

I have been ordering from Sarge's at least twice a week ever since I found them about a year ago. Everything is top quality, fast delivery, and always delicious. You can't go wrong with Sarge's! And the Grilled Chicken Ceasar Salad Platter is the best I have ever had!

2 hours just for a sandwhich???? HORRIBLE
Posted 4 years ago by Steve (Steven) P.
If you want to have Sarge's, you should make sure you order the night before so you can get it when you are ready to eat. Its only the second time I have ever ordered from this place and the first time took 2 hours to get delivery. Since that was a football sunday afternoon, i gave them the benefit of the doubt. So I tried again and they beat their original delivery time by 5 minutes. I can't even rate the food because its like eating yesterday's leftovers by the time it gets here.

Food is good - but don't count on it arriving anywhere NEAR what they say. If you want food on time, this is NOT the place to get it from. They are slow and disorganized.

Good corned-beef sandwich. Below-average knish.
Posted 4 years ago by Mark B.
The food is decent but make sure you're ready to wait well over an hour for delivery. If you call the restaurant to inquire about your order, you'll get the standard response that delivery is on its way. There is an added annoyance of getting the call that your delivery has arrived only to wait in the lobby while delivery gets to you. I will not order from this vendor again.

Burgers were good, and took about 40 minutes to deliver. Would definitely order again from them.
